A MAJOR GAP GETS FILLED
This is the first time an extensive collection of sounds of Birds is published for Costa Rica.
In recent years, about every country in the neo-tropics has seen some major publication illustrating the vocalizations of its avifauna. For Costa Rica, one of the countries with the highest diversity of birds on earth, and probably the number one traveling destination for eco-tourism, surprisingly this has not been the case.
With this MP3-DVD a major gap gets filled.
A RECORD NUMBER OF SOUNDS OF BIRD SPECIES FOR COSTA RICA
No less then 765 species and 2060 recordings are presented. (for a complete specieslist see below the pictures on this page).
The total playing time is over 15 hours, the equivalent of some 15 audio CD's!
The collection can be considered quite complete, and includes most of the vocalizations commonly heard while exploring Costa Rican nature (excluding pelagic seabirds and the Cocos island endemics).
A LANDMARK FOR COSTA RICA
Most of the recordings have been taken by Peter Boesman in Costa Rica itself, but to increase the overall comprehensiveness an important number comes from other neo-tropical countries. Peter could use his database of over 28.000 recordings from the Neotropics. While this formed an excellent basis to start from, it is thanks to several contributions of other recordists that this comprehensiveness could be achieved !
MORE SPECIES, MORE RECORDINGS
General knowledge of bird sounds has increased dramatically over the last decade, and as a consequence, whenever a new work is being published, also the level of expectation is gradually climbing. A mere single recording per species is no longer considered good enough a standard. We have therefore made a special effort to bring together a true sound collection, illustrating as much as possible the bird voices of Costa Rica. And to increase the overall comprehensiveness an important number comes from other Neo-tropical countries..
EXTRA INFORMATION
Every recording includes embedded information such as English name, Scientific name, Date and time of recording, Locality name, Recordist, and in some cases further remarks or comments about background species.
The aim of this work is to cover as many bird species as possible occurring in Costa Rica. Thus, in the selection of recordings, completeness was the main driver, with quality coming only in second place.
We hope this sound production will help birders and scientists in many ways, and will eventually – by continued interest in eco-tourism and conservation – benefit the marvelous birds of Costa Rica…
